We create buildings and spaces that elevate human experience.
Our projects bring architecture and innovation to often overlooked building types—affordable housing, speculative office, retail, and other structures that make up the everyday fabric of our communities. Based in Portland, Oregon, a city experiencing rapid growth and development, we live and work among our own designs. For us, each new project presents an opportunity to demonstrate that architectural quality is an essential aspect of city-building.
Our work explores making, materiality, and experience using an economy of design. Great work delivered with limited means requires precise architecture and a willingness to rethink how buildings are made. We challenge conventional methods of fabrication, use local and commonplace materials in unexpected ways, and pursue construction that benefits the environment and regional economy. This approach emphasizes transformation at every level of design and brings greater beauty and meaning to the final built work.
Thomas F. Robinson, Founding Principal
Thomas Robinson founded LEVER Architecture in 2009. His work explores the link between architectural experience and material innovation. Thinking at the level of construction from the outset allows Robinson to align concept with reality and bring greater quality to everyday building types. His 16-person practice is pioneering the use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in the US with Framework—a project slated to be the fifirst mass timber high-rise in the US and a recipient of the US Tall Wood Building Prize Competition. Prior to founding LEVER, Robinson led cultural and institutional projects for Allied Works and Herzog & de Meuron.
