Wallhouse in Lavrion, Attica, Greece
La vivienda es para una familia que deseaba trasladarse a un barrio periférico de Atenas. El sitio está ubicado en una pendiente en Agios Konstantinos, Lavrion. Hacia el oeste existe un banco empinado cubierto por una alta vegetación. Hacia el sur, el sitio tiene vistas hacia el mar enmarcadas entre dos montañas. La forma del edificio es una reinterpretación del gesto primordial de la arquitectura, la pared. El edificio en sí se convierte en un muro - límite, por lo que la manipulación de las aberturas sirven para unir y separa dos mundos diferentes, el espacio público y el patio privado. La vivienda se distribuye a lo largo de dicha pared. Su geometría es elemental, una simple línea en el suelo orientada hacia la costa. La pendiente occidental del sitio permite visuales desde el patio privado hacia el paisaje y el bosque. El edificio se erige como una piedra calcificada en un campo cubierto de hierba, en armonía con su entorno.
The building is a single dwelling for a family of four who wished to relocate to a peripheral suburb of Athens. The site is located on a slope in Aghios Konstantinos, Lavrion. To the west of the site is a steep bank covered in tall vegetation. To the south, the site enjoys a view of the sea framed between two mountains. The building’s form is a reinterpretation of the primal architectural gesture, the wall. The building itself becomes a wall, or boundary, whereby manipulation of the openings along its length serve to unite and separates two different worlds; public space and the private yard.
Occupation of the house is arranged along the wall, in situ. Its underlying geometry is elementary, a simple line in the ground oriented towards the coast. The western incline of the site permits views that take in the private courtyard with the wider landscape and the forest.
The main volume is placed on a northern axis, and as a result, the path described by the overhead sun indicates the time of day to the occupants. Meanwhile, transverse rows of deciduous and evergreen trees (on the Northern side) act as natural filters for privacy and shade.
The building stands as a calcified stone on a grassy field, in harmony with its surroundings.
Wallhouse was awarded and exhibited at the 6th Biennale of Young Architects in Athens, was awarded as one of the 12 top projects of 2008-10 by the DOMES awards 2011 in Greece, received the 40under 40 award 2011 by the European Centre of Architecture, Art and Urban studies and was exhibited at the 13th International Biennale of Architecture in Buenos Aires.
