The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL) is New York’s new central circulating library, designed by Dutch architecture firm Mecanoo in collaboration with Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners. Built within the 1914 shell and steel frame of the Mid-Manhattan Library which it replaces, the 16,722 m2 (180,000 sq. ft.) building is topped with a spectacular angular roof and public rooftop amenities to make a new urban icon on Fifth Avenue.

Hillside

SAOTA’s Hillside home in Los Angeles is located immediately above Sunset Boulevard on a promontory just one over from Pierre Koenig’s landmark Stahl House. The site is a 20 000 square foot estate, featuring 300-degree views over the LA skyline and the city basin below, and the design was conceived of more as a self-contained oasis rather than a conventional house.

Together Apart

Design studio Davidson Rafailidis has completed the renovation and addition of a century-old, two-story brick building in Buffalo, NY. Built in approximately 1900 with a 1940s extension, the historic structure has operated as a grocery store, strip club, attorney’s office, and hair salon, among other businesses, in its past.

A Bronze House on Nightingale

Sited on a flat pad near the end of the street, the two-story, 13,000-square-foot Bronze House on Nightingale replaces a 3,000-square-foot single-family home originally constructed in the 1950s. To preserve existing views, the neighborhood follows a strict hillside ordinance that limits any new construction to no more than one story out of grade.

Taft

The Taft is a 3,930-square-foot, two-story, open plan house designed and built using HOMB, a prefabricated modular system developed by Skylab in collaboration with MethodHomes. The system provides an alternative to the typical time-consuming process of conventional site construction while also minimizing waste through precision prefabrication.

Sunrise

Conceived as a garden pavilion complimenting an existing contemporary guest house, Sunrise was designed to respond to its rugged, remote, and beautiful surroundings. The clients, a newly retired couple, have used the property and guest house as a weekend retreat for years. Admirers of our work, they were interested in collaborating with our firm to build a sleek, modern cabin in the hills above the Sonoma Wine Country.

Grand Avenue Park Bridge

The bridge creates a new viewing platform and civic space with an inventive, accessible pathway. The project is the first pedestrian and utility bridge designed by the firm in partnership with kpff consulting engineers, and it is a composition of concrete and steel, design and functionality, nature and digital design technology.

Plant Sciences Building

The project is a state-of-the-art building for collaborative research and is intended to support regional and global agriculture. the 82,437-square-foot building supports washington’s $51 billion food and agriculture industry by providing a modern research venue for faculty and students in the institute of biological chemistry, wsu's molecular plant science program, and portions of the departments of horticulture, plant pathology, and crop and soil sciences.

Lookout House

The building site had a significant influence on the design for this house. Layered with intense geologic history at the base of a three-million-year-old volcano, the site is a north-facing 20-degree slope with equal parts refuge and prospect at 6,300 feet above mean sea level.

Miner Road House

The clients are a couple of environmental scientists who, along with their two sons, relocated from the Oakland Hills to the summer climate of Orinda. Their commitment to sustainability, including a request for net-zero energy performance annually, was evident throughout the design process. A three-bedroom program began as a remodel of a 1954 ranch house at the foot of a hill next to a seasonal creek.

Construction begins on MVRDV’s mixed-use tower in San Francisco

Construction has started on MVRDV’s 23-storey mixed-use building at Mission Rock in San Francisco. The project is one of four buildings in Phase 1 of a multi-phase masterplan developed by the San Francisco Giants and Tishman Speyer. It is designed as part of a collaborative design process, with four architecture firms designing their plot in conversation with the other three offices. Alongside the MVRDV project, the masterplan also includes designs by the internationally renowned architecture firms Studio Gang, Henning Larsen, and WORKac.
