The curators pointed out that they were very pleasantly surprised by the high number of applications from so many different regions across the globe – and from as far away as Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Japan, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the USA. They highlighted that entries reflecting new or fresh contemporary approach or mindset were chosen. The majority of entries were interesting, with a large number of entries that shared certain contemporary qualities, were well executed, refreshing and aesthetically well expressed.

Selected works for the BIO 23 exhibition show an impulse of how designers and the works they create are influenced by modern technologies, digitalisation and new technologies and how contemporary designers embrace the resourcefulness of nature and its processes. Throughout the history of BIO, industrial design has always been a primary focus. Today this area of design remains highly important in the wider discipline that is design; therefore a special section of the BIO 23 exhibition is dedicated to products selected within the field of industrial design. The works selected for the BIO 23 exhibition are divided into four main categories: Technology, Digitalisation, Globalisation and Products. The first three categories are subdivided into several subcategories. Under Technology are Health, Machines and Processes, and Science; under Digitalisation are Back to Crafts, Counter Reaction, Data Processing, Graphic; and under Globalisation are the subcategories Industry Leftovers, Social Local, Urban Environment, Smart Solutions.

The BIO 23 exhibition will be displayed from 27 September to 11 November 2012 at the Museum of Architecture and Design, Ljubljana, Slovenia. The international jury Giulio Cappellini, Sven Jonke, Sophie Lovell, Jimmy MacDonald and Vasa J. Perović will award to the best design works exhibited. The BIO Gold Medal, BIO Green Award, BIO Honourable mentions, and the Award for a Student Work will be bestowed at the opening ceremony of the Biennial on 27 September. The winner of the BIO Gold Medal will receive a monetary prize in the amount of 5,000 €. The international exhibition of contemporary design will be accompanied by the guided tours, creative workshops for children, screenings, lectures, conference, presentations of products and other exhibitions and events around the city of Ljubljana.
