Father Collins Public Park – Design Competition

Winner Announcement, Friday 12th December 2003 at 3pm, Civic Offices, Dublin 8

Dublin City Council is redeveloping Father Collins Park in Donaghmede as part of its ambitious plan for the North Fringe Area. The international design competition for the park?s redesign received 43 entries from Tokyo to Toronto with the winning entry coming from Abelleyro and Romeo Architects from Buenos Ares in Argentina.

The newly designed 22 hectare park will cost an estimated 12 million and includes;
* 17 playing pitches,
* extensive children’s playgrounds
* running track
* quality landscaping and planting
* innovative water feature and café
The park is of contemporary design and features a ribbon-like promenade running from North to South. An unusual feature of the design is the inclusion of wind turbines to power the park.

Mr. John Fitzgerald, City Manager will present Mr. Abelleyro and Mr. Romero with the winning award in the atrium Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8 at 3pm on Friday 12th December 2003 in the presence of the Argentinean Ambassador.

An exhibition of all entries received will take place in the Atrium on Friday 12th December and the following week, from15th to 18th December 2003.

Father Collins Park was named after Fr. Joseph Collins, Parish Priest of Holy Trinity Parish in Donaghmede in the late 1970’s. Father Collins was instrumental in encouraging the then Dublin Corporation to acquire this land to provide sports and recreational facilities for the growing population of Donaghmede.

* Magahy and Company, Dublin
* VHP, Rotterdam
* Landscape Projects Limited, Manchester
