Located in a former factory building in the rapidly changing artist’s neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn, a small industrial loft, awkwardly subdivided by existing partitions, was transformed into a bright and open space that could be comfortably shared by three young roommates moving into what would become their first shared loft in the city. Resonating with the neighborhood’s unassuming spirit, and dealing with the reality of the ever increasing scarcity of affordable living space, the design manages to make the most of very limited space. Modest yet ambitious, it was completed at short notice with an exceedingly tight budget.
The existing partitions subdividing the small 660 sqft (60m) loft were removed and three independent volumes were clustered around a central common area. Huddling together, these rooms within a room create intimate private spaces while maximizing the shared living area needed for gatherings and daily communal living. Glazed openings allow light inside the bedrooms, which are arranged to receive as much light as possible from the loft’s large windows, while providing views of the rapidly changing post-industrial neighborhood.

Architect: You know this will probably take longer and surely end up costing more?
