Autor: Dorte Mandrup
Dorte Mandrup is a Danish architecture studio specialized in working with irreplaceable places – irreplaceable landscapes, cultures and stories. This is an exhilarating struggle – a negotiation between place, history, culture and local identity with the architect brought in to create new meaning. We the architects, work to highlight what is there and create new relevance, both challenging the place and underlining its inherent qualities. Unsentimental but contextually aware.
The studio was established in Copenhagen in 1999. As founder and Creative Director, Dorte Mandrup every day inspires an international team of 70 dedicated people, with a firm grasp on reality with a knack for dreaming out loud. They are driven by a devout belief in the possibilities of contemporary architecture and an experimental curiosity that insists on outstanding craftmanship.
Dorte Mandrup designs architecture from an artistic starting point. At its best, this leads to architecture as art and art as architecture, that understands and seduces its users and audiences. The studio designs with a sense of place and materiality. The Scandinavian heritage leads the team to naturally consider all human scale aspects in their approach in creating sustainable, conceptual and artistic architectural solutions. Through prestigious UNESCO related landmark projects Dorte Mandrup demonstrates a unique ability to evoke the identity of fragile places and actively involve the surrounding nature or urban context.
Dorte Mandrup’s work has received national and international acclaim, such as the The Green Good Design Award by The Chicago Athenaeum, the Danish Wood Award, the Swedish Wood Award, the Bauwelt Award, the Eckersberg Medal, the Dreyer Foundation Honorary Award, The Nykredit Architecture Prize, The C.F. Hansen Medal, The Danish National Bank Jubilee Fund’s Honorary Award, The Finn Juhl Architecture Award and most recently the lifelong Honorary Grant by the Danish Arts Foundation.
As a frequent voice in public debate, Dorte Mandrup herself is well known for her commitment to the development of the architectural profession and its role in society. She is Vice Chairman of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, member of the Historic Buildings Council, Adjunct Professor at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, chairwoman of the EU Mies van der Rohe Award 2019, and acts as frequent visiting professor including in 2018 at Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning.
