The Practice

Founded in Beirut in 1997, Fouad Samara Architects has earned a reputation for delivering design excellence and innovation in projects ranging from small urban infill housing, like the recently completed Modulofts in Beirut, to large single family houses, commercial projects both retail and offices, and higher education such as CASID in northern Lebanon. FSA aims to produce an indigenous and authentic architecture that is derived from and is relevant to its cultural, social, physical, and economic context. This includes applying a stringent design process, harboring a close interactive relationship with the client, based on research and invention to develop an architecture of integrity. The practice seeks a unique architectural solution for each and every project, void of any stylistic or branding preoccupation, and that aspires to the continuously fresh and relevant ‘l’esprit nouveau’ of the Modern Movement. While respecting our cultural and architectural heritage, we engage with the future with confidence and optimism.

Current projects include a mixed use 13,000 sm development on a challenging sloping site on the edge of Beirut, a 27 story 18,500 sm residential tower in Beirut, and a microflats residential building in Jeddah, KSA, among other residential projects.

‘Fouad Samara completed the final year of the BArch course at Bath in 1995, and wrote a dissertation on the Smithson’s Building 6 East, for which he interviewed Peter (Smithson). I suggested better-known speakers to Peter for the symposium, but he insisted: ‘No, no; it must be Fouad. You see, he understands’.’

Adapted from Emeritus Professor Patrick Hodgkinson’s introduction to the A+PS Symposium at the School of Architecture and Civil Engineering, the University of Bath, 15 October 1994.

Fouad studied architecture at the University of Bath winning in 1993 the architecture department’s principal academic award, The Sir Basil Spence Prize, for his Degree Project. In 1995 Fouad completed the BArch course at Bath with his Diploma project, an Olympic Stadium and village on London’s South Bank, published in Building Design’s class of 1995 identifying that year’s top architectural graduates in the UK. Fouad presented a paper, Toujour Vers Une Architecture, on Alison and Peter Smithson’s building for the School of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Bath, Building 6 East, at the A+PS Symposium in October 1994; and went on to co-author Modernism Without Rhetoric, published by Academy Editions in 1997.

After working in Montreal and London, Fouad returned to Lebanon and set up Fouad Samara Architects in 1997 with the aim of contributing to the cultural renaissance the vibrant city of Beirut was witnessing after the end of the civil war.

Over the past 20 years, the practice has grown and completed projects in Lebanon and the rest of the MENA region, and that have proven to satisfy clients’ aspirations and have positively impacted the urban realm.
