The new Seinäjoki library assumes a place within the city’s existing administrative and cultural centre designed by Alvar Aalto. Fitting the building to this distinguished pre-existing environment formed the most significant starting point of the design process. Aalto’s masterpiece of urban design is not an easy target for complementary construction. The aim was to create a new building that not only adapts to its prestigious setting but also challenges it.
The program of the library reflects the needs of a quintessential public library of any mid-sized city. Open, adaptable spaces connect to one another seamlessly, while views unfold towards the most impressive aspects of the environs. The spatial design pays special attention to the changing role of the library; the collection itself is no longer the centre of focus, but rather the space itself as a location for public gatherings, social contact, and the simple act of being in the presence of knowledge.
