wa_sauna, a motor-powered floating sauna, explores ideas of community, journey, and retreat. Following in the tradition of saunas as a place for gathering, wa_sauna provides a place for friends and the community to share a unique experience on the water. Boaters and kayakers can venture out and tie off to the surrounding deck. The 240-square-foot sauna is powered by a 36-volt electric trolling motor, allowing it to quietly explore Seattle’s lakes. The sauna can accommodate up to six people and is heated by a wood burning stove. The surrounding water serves as a natural cold plunge post sauna. The exterior is wrapped in ebony-stained plywood. Spruce was used to clad the interior and to form the benches. The $25,000 project was funded through community donations and a Kickstarter fundraising campaign. The deck consists of a pre-manufactured aluminum frame and marine-grade plywood with a clear varnish. More than two dozen plastic drums keep the little vessel afloat.
