Tatsumi Apartment House

Tatsumi Apartment House is a residential project located in eastern part of Tokyo. The neighbourhood features congested streets and public transport stations nearby.

The 10 floors stacked volume tower has a building area of 47.97 square metres. To block out city noise a reinforced concrete structure was preferred for its sound absorbency, and to help buffer vibrations   emanating from a nearby subway tunnel. Adopting this structure, columns and beams may become too large objects in such modest sized room of 34 square metres. So we took advantage from what might be regarded as convenient structural condition creating comfortable human-size niches in between the massive vertical and horizontal structural members. Dimension of columns and beams become smaller proceeding to words the floors and so also the depth of the sunken floors and niches is reduced in upper apartments.

This change from enclosure to spaciousness corresponds to the distance from the noisy street level. The dimensions of sunken spaces are slightly adjusted to 450 mm and 550 mm height for benches, storage, low table and 690 mm height for a standard tables and bed space. Various ways of using sunken space is up to dwellers and to specific measures of depth on each floor. To counter earthquakes on the sandy soil, a feature of the Tokyo Bay ground, a series of nine concrete piles of 30 metres length were dug below ground to secure the foundation. Then we anchored the foundation with steel cables that run deeper, reaching 50 metres below the sidewalk.
