Historic Society Hill Townhouse
LO Design completely revamped this historic Society Hill townhome's lower level to accommodate a large kitchen, living, dining, and play space for a young, growing family.
Underneath a large, double height opening that floods the space with soft and even light and connects both levels of the home, a winding oak staircase leads into the home’s new kitchen.
Clad in soft, white Shaker cabinets with natural slate flooring, oak butcher block island, and soft grey Quartzite countertops, the space’s palette is soft and bright but extremely durable, intended for daily family use. Punctuating the double height space with three sculptural, reflective Luceplan light fixtures, the lighting defines the small “eat-in” dining area within the kitchen. Intended for future use as a dining room but currently accommodating the family’s two active young children as a play area, the back of the home is adjacent to a stepped lightwell which also brings a beautifully even, northern light into the space.
The renovated lower level of this historic 4,000 SF home defies the standard definition of a compartmentalized Philadelphia rowhome or even a basement, making these spaces a completely functional and unified space for this family to enjoy for many years into the future.
