Helguvik-Bergvik
KCAP Finalise the Helguvik-Bergvik Framework Plan, in Iceland Helguvík-Bergvík is set to revolutionise Iceland's industrial landscape with a groundbreaking eco-industrial park—where cutting-edge circular economy principles meet sustainable energy solutions; redefining the future of industry, on a global scale.
Set in Iceland’s Suðurnes region, near Keflavík Airport, the Helguvík-Bergvík Framework Plan outlines the future development of an ambitious new eco-industrial park. The plan represents a forward-thinking approach to sustainable industrial development in Iceland, with a focus on integrating environmental, social and economic aspects, into one new comprehensive vision. The overarching goal is to transform Helguvík-Bergvík into a manufacturing and energy hub that boosts the economy while being caring to the environment. Positioned to become Iceland’s leading eco-industrial area, it’s set to create countless new jobs and elevate the region’s robust global competitiveness.
The circularity strategy aims to promote efficient resource use, minimise waste, and create synergies between industries, to improve overall sustainability. The site will be divided into six clustered areas, each focusing on different sectors such as clean energy, innovation park, circular economy, clean building, port logistics, food and bioeconomy. This division allows for tailored strategies for each area, ensuring a holistic and well-organised approach to land use and industrial activities. It’s a blueprint for turning the Suðurnes region, into a model of eco-industrial success, by balancing efficiency, environmental care and social responsibility on both local and international stages.
Urban design guidelines tackle everything from flexible plot divisions to architectural styles, landscape design, and mobility networks. The aim is to create a functional yet attractive industrial zone that’s adaptable for future needs. Landscapes and public spaces aren’t just afterthoughts; strategically placed ponds and artificial hills offer green retreats and act as visual buffers, making the area pleasant for workers and visitors alike.
Getting around will be a breeze thanks to robust roads and active mobility networks connecting the park. Sustainable transportation options like cycling and walking are front and center, and improved public transit with strategically located bus stops integrates the park into the broader regional infrastructure.
Rolling out over a 25-year timeline, the plan allows for gradual growth and adaptability as markets and technologies evolve. Flexibility is key, ensuring the site can welcome new industries or innovations down the line. In a nutshell, the Helguvík-Bergvík Framework Plan is a bold leap toward a sustainable and resilient industrial ecosystem in Iceland.
The plan has been developed for Kadeco, in collaboration with partners as Buro Happold, EFLA Consulting, and BCI Global, with contributions from experts in urban planning, landscape architecture, energy transformation and other related disciplines.
