The Gouse by Interior Architect Marta Nowicka

The Gouse, a 3-bedroom new build house located in Dalston East London, is the latest home designed by award-winning interior architect Marta Nowicka at DOMstayandlive.

The ‘Gouse’ name derives from ‘garage – house’ as originally stood an end of garden shed/garage on the site. The Gouse is available to rent on DOMstayandlive – a collection of the world’s most architecturally stunning homes available to stay in, founded by Marta Nowicka.

The main focus of the project was to conserve the ‘end of garden character’ yet improve the appearance of the street scene. The 45 sq/m piece of land acquired to build The Gouse consisted of a dilapidated end of garden garage/shed with the existing large garage doors fronting onto Forest Road creating a large gap in the brick wall. The exterior design has preserved the balance of the street elevation by recreating a garage frontage to match the adjacent property and reinstating the original London yellow stock brick wall. The cedar shingle cladding on the upper exterior resembles the look of a shed-like structure seeking to blend in with the surrounding garden landscape.

The cosy yet spacious, light interiors of The Gouse is designed over three floors in materials which echo the original end of garden shed-like structure – a herringbone oak floor runs throughout the house, nuances bits of wood found on a shed floor along with timber stairs referencing a ladder, which would be housed in garden shed.

Enter at street level through the hidden ‘yellow brick door’ where you are immediately welcomed by a bright space with huge glass doors looking onto the lace-brick wall at the rear of the property. At the front of the house is a bedroom with en-suite shower decorated in honey-combe patterned tiles. Light wells, ‘walk on me’ glass landings and open tread stairs circulate natural light to all three levels of the house. A living wall with potted green plants dress the rear lace brick wall creating an ‘indoor-outdoor’ living space on the first floor. Additionally, views of the ash tree next door enhance this strong visual connection with nature despite being in the city. Next to the living room is the master bedroom and a stone clad en-suite shower room with a glazed roof. In the basement sits the open plan timber veneer kitchen and dining-room with a separate family bathroom. In the dining-room, a Flos pendant hangs low above a Onsk table against the backdrop of green plants on the outdoor terrace. The terrace wall is cladded in ‘scented’ cedar shingles emphasising this ‘indoor-outdoor’ flow around the house.
