Gyeryongsan Mountain has beautiful mountains and is considered one of the four most famous mountains in Korea in terms of feng shui geography, and was designated as a national park for the second time after Jirisan Mountain.
Famous temples such as Donghaksa Temple, Gapsa Temple, and Shinwon Temple, and Gyeryongdae, the headquarters of Korea’s 3rd Army, are located, and in April, when cherry blossoms bloom every year, they are full of spring visitors from all over the place, and they are constantly visiting as hikers in four seasons.
The access road to Donghaksa Temple is lined with commercial facilities such as cafes and restaurants, and the streets are always busy with tourists and vehicles.
This building is located in a quiet village near Donghaksa Temple, a little out of this atmosphere, and its purpose was planned as a cafe.
The site for the main building was at different heights with a step difference in the center, and the flattening work was already completed, so separate civil engineering work did not seem necessary.
There was a house just behind it, and this house was in use by the owner, reducing the burden of the viewing rights issue due to the cafe.
The landscape unfolding on the ground was deep and unstoppable, and the peaks of Gyeryongsan Mountain surrounding it were calm and calm.
The direction of the building here came clearly, and he focused solely on the landscape and began to think about the form of the bowl that could capture it well.
In consideration of the vehicle’s entry and exit, the parking lot was placed at a lower level among the two divided places, and the building was placed at a high place left to increase the original visibility of commercial facilities and ensure maximum front view.
The two long walls starting from the entrance of the building overcome the steps to the parking lot, leading visitors to the parking lot.
Another route, the slope behind the parking lot, was planned as a convenience facility for the disabled, and unlike stairs, it loosely connects the boundary between the parking lot and the land and becomes a gentle architectural trail as if hiking the land.
First of all, in order to actively capture panoramic landscapes on the front, the building area prescribed by the Natural Parks Act is stretched horizontally, increasing the contact surface with the outside to the maximum width allowed by the land.
The building placed horizontally and lightly was active in the landscape of the front with a clear direction toward the front, but was somewhat passive in the surrounding landscape and was formatively monotonous.
To compensate for this problem, after reviewing various directions, the existing horizontal building was slightly bent at an angle of 140 degrees and designed in two wing shapes.
The building, which is bent at 140 degrees, is more active in the landscape of the front, and the view from the inside that connects with the surrounding landscape through each curved surface is not unreasonable.
The shape of the dynamic wing, which seems to fly toward the front, has a formative function as a commercial facility, and gives a small sense of rhythm to the static village.
The concrete eaves surrounding the building with the same physical properties are framed inside to focus their eyes on the landscape in the front, and the outside emphasizes the shape of the building and does not hide the intention of design.
A separate space on the first floor, created with the intention of space diversity, enhances the floating feeling of the wings on the second floor, and the ecological landscape decorated behind the space catches visitors’ attention in contrast to the surrounding nature.
Lighting, an important design element of commercial facilities, is not too strong, and is planned along the unique lines of the building to preserve its shape and reveal its shape well.
As time passes and darkness begins to fall, the sharp building lines in the middle of the day gradually disappear and begin to appear again with illumination light.
The exterior material of the building was restrained as much as possible so that it was not excessively exposed to the surrounding environment, and the interior space, excluding possible decorative elements, is decorated with colorful landscape paintings of Gyeryongsan Mountain that change throughout the four seasons.
