Senior Shelter
i29 is realizing a home for a family of three generations
On the site with an existing main house, i29 architects designed a second senior residence. The single-story house has a floor area of 100 m² and constitutes a valuable addition within the scale and context of the existing site. The careful positioning creates a natural relationship between the main and outbuildings, with a strong sense of connection and respect for each other’s privacy. Since its completion, the grandparents have enjoyed being close to their children and grandchildren, and vice versa. Within the living volume, architecture and interior design uniquely blend into one integrated whole.
A light and open living landscape
The new building is designed as a single-story house under a rafter roof. The bedroom and bathroom are located on the north side as a quiet zone. Large sliding doors surrounding a centrally located patio provide long sightlines and an open, airy experience. This patio connects the kitchen, dining room, and living room with an outdoor space that functions as a natural extension of the interior. The three fully opening glass doors create a fluid transition from indoors to outdoors, while sliding panels on the west side provide privacy and shelter. Clear Architecture
The house exudes understated strength. The waxed wood-clad facades support a modern roof of sandwich panels with a minimalist, integrated rain gutter. The roof is deliberately kept open and overhangs all the way around, enhancing the spatial experience from within and creating a covered walking area. The roof is visible in all interior spaces and forms a defining element of the spatial experience. It connects the interior functions with the green surroundings outside. The interior, with a light gray concrete floor, light oak walls, and a white-painted rafter roof, creates a serene, natural atmosphere.
Unity and Tranquility
The roof is supported by the oak wall cladding, which continues all around and further emphasizes the high ceiling. All custom cabinets and the kitchen follow the same height line, creating a harmonious whole. Exterior walls visually flow seamlessly into the custom interior elements, inextricably linking architecture and interior design.
With this independent senior home, i29 demonstrates that living together in smaller spaces doesn’t have to come at the expense of quality, comfort, or spaciousness. Quite the opposite: the result is a future-proof home that excels in simplicity, clarity, and a personal touch.
