Oberwil House

The duplex family home is located in a suburban community of Basel, nestled in a green neighborhood on a hillside. The building volume is worked like a sculpture, with distinctive protrusions and recesses that lend it a unique scale and identity.

Facing the street, there is an inviting gesture with generous entrances seamlessly blending into the rising terrain. Connected by open stairwell spaces, the entirely open and universally oriented living floor is surrounded by a horizontally laid facade band. This gesture contrasts mass and lightness in the main living area, crucially shaping the sculpture of the house with the recessed, massive volumes above. Inside, the spatial sequence continues, leading from the first floor to the concluding, openly designed attic storey. The nuanced interplay between mass and delicacy runs through the entire house, defined by a clear structural framework.

While the floor plans of both units are fundamentally symmetrical, attention is paid to the individual needs of the residents in the details, while maintaining the uniform facade as a whole. The material selection stands out with abstract forms and consistent color tones. Concrete plays a significant role in the appearance, while occasional wood elements provide accents.
