Tanzhaus, in Zürich

The project seeks to reactivate the promenade along the Limmat river and connect the itineraries that intertwine along its bank through a simple and compact volume that adjusts to the site’s tiered profile.

The new building, which can be accessed directly from both the western and eastern sides of Wasserwerkstrasse, transforms and redefines the current residual condition of its location, turning it into a new public space along the river. The ample space in front of the building and the reduced height of the structure’s facade give the impression of a building that opens up to its surroundings, so that this area acquires a new public and urban condition as an element of the river’s identity.

The building’s programme is clearly organized across two tiered levels. Accesses are placed on both levels independently, which easily resolves the connections between the different spaces of the programme and those that relate the building to its surroundings. In the textile design school, the existing nature of the landscape is hardly changed, since the only actions developed are the extension of the garden to the south and the parking area.

The dance school, on the lower level, sets the tone of the urban relationship between the building and the riverside promenade through a series of openings that minimize its presence in the whole.

The result enables understanding of the proposal as a new urban ensemble with a strong public vocation, in which each of the elements is capable of preserving its own identity.
