Steven Holl was born in 1947 in Bremerton, Washington. He graduated from the University of Washington and pursued architecture studies in Rome in 1970. In 1976 he attended the Architectural Association in London and established STEVEN HOLL ARCHITECTS in New York City. Considered one of America’s most important architects, Steven Holl is recognized for his ability to blend space and light with great contextual sensitivity and to utilize the unique qualities of each project to create a concept-driven design. He specializes in seamlessly integrating new projects into contexts with particular cultural and historic importance.

Steven Holl has realized cultural, civic, academic and residential projects both in the United States and internationally. Notable work includes the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Finland (1998), Sarphatistraat Offices, Amsterdam (2000), Chapel of St. Ignatius, Seattle, Washington (1997), and the much-celebrated Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Bloch Building in Kansas City, Missouri (2007). Most recently completed are Sliced Porosity Block – CapitaLand Raffles City (Chengdu, China, 2012), the Daeyang Gallery and House (Seoul, Korea, 2012), the Cité de l’Océan et du Surf (Biarritz, France, 2011), and the Horizontal Skyscraper (Shenzhen, China, 2009).

Recently the office has won a number of international design competitions including the new design for the Houston Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, USA), new design for the Institute of Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, USA), the new Art Building at the University of Iowa (Iowa City, USA), and the new design for the Glasgow School of Art (Glasgow, UK).

Steven Holl has been recognized with architecture’s most prestigious awards and prizes. Recently, Steven Holl received the 2012 AIA Gold Medal, the RIBA 2010 Jencks Award, and the first ever Arts Award of the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards (2009). Steven Holl has received honorary degrees from Seattle University and Moholy-Nagy University in Budapest. In 2003 he was named Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). In 2002 the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, part of the Smithsonian Institute, awarded him their prestigious National Design Award in Architecture. In 2001 France bestowed the Grande Médaille d’Or upon him, for Best Architect of the Academy of Architecture; and in the same year Time Magazine declared him «America’s Best Architect» for his ‘buildings that satisfy the spirit as well as the eye’.

In 2012, the Daeyang Gallery and House received an Annual Design Review Award, and a LEAF Award, and the Cité de l’Océan et du Surf was given an American Architecture Award. In 2011, the Horizontal Skyscraper received an AIA National Honor Award, and in 2010 the Knut Hamsun Center and the Horizontal Skyscraper were given an AIA New York Honor Award, and the Herning Museum of Contemporary Art won a RIBA Award.

Steven Holl is a tenured Professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture and Planning. He has lectured and exhibited widely and has published numerous texts, including Anchoring (1989), Intertwining (1996), Parallax (2000), Idea and Phenomena (2002), Luminosity/Porosity (2006), House: black swan theory (2007), Architecture Spoken (2007), Urbanisms: Working with Doubt (2009), Hamsun Holl Hamarøy (2010). Most recently published are Horizontal Skyscraper (2011), Scale (2012), and Color Light Time (2012).

Steven Holl is a member of the American National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), the American Institute of Architects, the American Association of Museums, the Honorary Whitney Circle, the Whitney Museum of American Art; and the International Honorary Committee, Vilpuri Library, of the Alvar Aalto Foundation.

Sliced Porosity Block en Chengdu, China

Linked Hybridn, in Beijing

El complejo de 220.000 metros cuadrados Linked Hybrid en Beijing tiene por objeto crear un espacio urbano poroso para el siglo XXI, contrarrestando el actual desarrollo urbano en China. Una experiencia fílmica urbana que a través de múltiples facetas y capas espaciales, así como de muchos pasajes, hacen de Hybrid una "ciudad abierta dentro de una ciudad". El proyecto promueve las relaciones interactivas y alienta los encuentros en los espacios públicos que varían desde los comerciales y residenciales hasta los recreativos y educativos; un concepto tridimensional del espacio público urbano.

Vanke Center

Asomando sobre un jardín tropical, este "rascacielos horizontal" es una construcción híbrida que incluye departamentos, un hotel, y oficinas para la sede de Vanke Co. Ltd. Un centro de conferencias, spa y estacionamiento se ubican en la gran plano verde, un paisaje tropical con terraplenes que contienen los restaurantes y un auditorio de 500 asientos.

Knut Hamsun Center, Norway

Knut Hamsun, el escritor noruego más inventivo del siglo XX, creó nuevas formas de expresión en su primera novela Hambre y fundó una verdadera escuela moderna de ficción con sus obras Pan, Mysteries y Growth of the Soil. Este Centro dedicado a Hamsun se encuentra por encima del Círculo Polar Ártico, cerca de la aldea de Presteid de Hamarøy, próxima a la granja donde el escritor creció.
