Four winning and 10 highly commended projects submitted by emerging architects from around the world are the recipients of the 2012 ar+d Emerging Architecture Award, presented by The Architectural Review and sponsored by the Danish architectural hardware design company, d line. The ar+d Emerging Architecture award recognises projects of exceptional merit designed by architects and associated design professionals who are 45 years of age or younger. More than 236 submissions were received for the 2012 awards competition.

This year’s four winning projects include a glass house in Japan, a community centre in rural earthquake-prone Bangladesh built on low-lying land susceptible to chronic flooding, an innovative 10-family condominium in Winnipeg, and temporary facilities for a nomadic music festival that had been commissioned at the last minute due to emergency circumstances. Original and practical, thoughtful and inventive, these projects demonstrate fresh approaches to a variety of architectural challenges.

Of the ten highly commended projects, there are such diverse designs as a ‘living plant’ chandelier, a school in China made of recycled brick, a cemetery enlargement in Italy, an ‘umbrella’ tea house in Japan and a training centre in the cinnamon forests of Sumatra. All 14 selected projects are published in the pages of The Architectural Review’s December 2012 issue and will be exhibited at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London until the end of February 2013.

A reception and private viewing of the winning projects will be held on Thursday, 29 December, from 6:00 to 8:30pm at the Royal Institute of British Architects, 66 Portland Place, London W1B 1AD.
